Sterility Testing:  Only microbiology culture can detect a few organisms per mL, as required for bottle sterility testing. Culture requires up to 15 days and microbiology experience. 

‘Matching’ sensory evaluation:  Z-Brett detects Brett at much lower concentrations than sensory evaluation, before 4EG & 4EP can be smelled/tasted.  Mixed cultures of wine spoilage bacteria can produce barn-yard odors and off-flavors.  4EG & 4EP defects persist after removal of Brettanomyces by filtration.

Confirmation:  Z-Brett is for screening; a confirmatory test is recommended prior to initiating expensive remediation, or to definitively distinguish Brettanomyces from other spoilage yeasts.
